More Catholic Sex Scandals

Well, once again folks the Catholic Church demonstrates just how holy and spiritual they are, and proved once again that the Catholic policy on sex and priests and nuns is derailing the Church. I’ll bet if they look real close at the Bible they will find there really isn’t any Biblical reason to keep their priests celibate.

Full story here

“DUBLIN – After a nine-year investigation, a commission published a damning report Wednesday on decades of rapes, humiliation and beatings at Catholic Church-run reform schools for Ireland’s castaway children.”

“The investigation of the tax-supported schools uncovered previously secret Vatican records that demonstrated church knowledge of pedophiles in their ranks all the way back to the 1930s.”

“A climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and all those run for boys. Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from,” Ireland’s Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse concluded.”

“The Catholic religious orders that ran more than 50 workhouse-style reform schools from the late 19th century until the mid-1990s offered public words of apology, shame and regret Wednesday. But when questioned, their leaders indicated they would continue to protect the identities of clergy accused of abuse — men and women who were never reported to police, and were instead permitted to change jobs and keep harming children.”

“The report found that molestation and rape were “endemic” in boys’ facilities, chiefly run by the Christian Brothers order, and supervisors pursued policies that increased the danger. Girls supervised by orders of nuns, chiefly the Sisters of Mercy, suffered much less sexual abuse but frequent assaults and humiliation designed to make them feel worthless.”

I don’t know about you, but I’ll bet members/officials of the Catholic Church have been doing this for two thousand years and in every nook and cranny on earth where they operate.  We even have historical records of early Popes engaging in sexual no-no’s.   If you keep track of church related sex and pedophile scandals…you have to wonder if these people really think that God is watching, or do they know there is no God and they don’t have to worry.  It goes on daily, and unfortunately, in all Christian denominations.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how these sexual predators in the churches can be crushed and made to see how wrong this is?

  1. It is very disgusting.

On your other claims – celibacy does not cause child sexual abuse. In fact, the sexual difficulties and inner psychological problems that give rise to child sexual abuse are largely in place long before a person enters into the formation process for a celibate priesthood. In addition, most adults who sexually molest minors are, or will be, married. The data does not support such a conclusion.

On whether a celibate priesthood attracts a larger proportion of men with sexual problems there isn’t enough data to determine if that is true or not. Imagine attempting to get a large enough sample in the general population of adult males admitting to sexually abusing a child in their life time. Hopefully we can collect data to see if there is any validity in it.

Anyway lets take the worse case in this country- the Archdiocese of Boston released the names of 80 priests who had sexually molested minors over the last 50 years. There are 800 priests in the archdiocese, so this represents 10 percent of the total. However since the time frame is over the past 50 years there were probably about 3,000 priests or 2% of the total. That’s much less then the society at large.

One case is too many but to suggestion that priests are more likely to be child abusers than other males simply isn’t there. The media has been very effective in painting that as true , but it is in fact false.

In retrospect, the actions of many bishops was wrong in requiring “gag orders” to settle claims. A big problem IMO in this country are the laws. It does not require the bishop to report the allegation if the victim is no longer a minor and the bishop has a concurrent obligation to maintain pastoral confidentiality with those who confide in him, just as a secular counsellor would. If the law does not give him “permission” to break confidentiality and report the abuse, then he is obligated by law to protect confidentiality.

I don’t know what the solution is, but there has to be an option for disclosure.

Any priest who sexually molests a minor should never be returned to parish ministry or any ministry involving minors.

The much bigger (and I’m speaking about the stats) is in public schools. While gov’t has expanded the ability to sue private institutions like the Catholic church, the public schools where the problem is much greater is very limited.

Our society as a whole is sick. The sexual revolution opened up a cesspool and our children have paid the price for it.

    Hi Quickbeamoffangorn,

    You write:
“…celibacy does not cause child sexual abuse. In fact, the sexual difficulties and inner psychological problems that give rise to child sexual abuse are largely in place long before a person enters into the formation process for a celibate priesthood…”

So what’s the problem? Does the Church just hire the wrong kind of people a lot of the time? Do you think candidates for priesthood should be subjected to above average psychological exams? Don’t you think the first response to sexual abuse should be to “fire” anyone caught with their pants down, so to speak? I just wonder how any intelligent organization or leader could ever condone just moving the predator to another “playground.”

Hypothetical question. What if we were to take a thousand people from the average American neighborhood and a thousand priests from the Church…are you saying that both will have the same number of sexual predators or pedophiles?

    You write:
“Imagine attempting to get a large enough sample in the general population of adult males admitting to sexually abusing a child in their life time…”

The only current method to compare samples I suppose would be to compare conviction numbers, priest to civilian.

    You write:
“Any priest who sexually molests a minor should never be returned to parish ministry or any ministry involving minors.”

I concur and I would add that first offense should involve hefty jail time and a second offense should be life in prison. I have heard some very learned psychologists say that pedophilia is a chronic disease that never goes away.

The public school problem with sex seems to be female teachers seducing young men who are mostly a walking hormone ready to have sex with just about anything female. I should have been so lucky when I was in school. 🙂 These boys will not be harmed mentally unless they both get caught and publicized by the press…at least this is my gut feeling as a guy and from memories I have as a teenager.

Getting subjected to anal rape as a youngster is a totally different proposition for about 90% or more of the male population than is male/female relations.

    You write:
“Any priest who sexually molests a minor should never be returned to parish ministry or any ministry involving minors.”

Any priest who molests a minor should be fired and reported to the police immediately, no if ands or buts.

    You write:
“Our society as a whole is sick. The sexual revolution opened up a cesspool and our children have paid the price for it.

Agreed and somewhat agreed. However I remember the times before the sexual revolution and things weren’t that much better. There were still the pedophiles, I remember being propositioned in an oblique way as a youngster, and there were still rapes and abortions and infidelity. There was also the government looking into your bedroom and deciding what you could do there and having laws to throw you in prison if you disagreed. Many laws were made by religious zealots.

Well a couple of points. First yes there are much stricter profiles of candidates coming into the priesthood. Second, yes anytime a priest is convicted of child abuse they should be removed from ever being in a position involving authority and children. The Third point is difficult because we’re talking about a long period in the past. No one knew that pedophiles couldn’t be cured (I’m speaking about children under the age of about 13). You have to remember that the church believes in mercy and that all sins can be forgiven. This aspect worked against the church, because they really thought back in the 40 to 70’s that priests could repent and be healed. The other bishop to gets the priest then didn’t know what he was getting until later down the road. Additionally when I was growing up a priest was held in very high esteem so when someone accused them no one believed them. Today of course its the complete opposite.

“What if we were to take a thousand people from the average American neighborhood and a thousand priests from the Church…are you saying that both will have the same number of sexual predators or pedophiles?”

Yes. Now if you took a sample of public schools vs. Catholic schools the number of predators in the public school would be literally 100 times higher then priests.

“The public school problem with sex seems to be female teachers seducing young men who are mostly a walking hormone ready to have sex with just about anything female. I should have been so lucky when I was in school.”

I am sorry to break this to you but that just sells media air time. Go to the link I gave and look at page 28. It’s estimated that there are 36 million children abused in the public school system by paedophiles.

  4. thewordofme says:

And it never gets recorded…just estimated…36 million? So now its safer to send your children to a Catholic school?

  5. Well the stats demonstrate its safer. However as a parent myself, you don’t or shouldn’t trust your child to anyone to the extent most of these cases involve. Note the paedophile looks for kids in need. Kids that leave there kids for sleep overs with parents they don’t know happens all the time. Heck I coach soccer & little league baseball and naturally I have to go thru a child protective test just like all the coaches, but I doubt its in depth enough to catch all the trash that’s out there. I can’t tell you the number of times one or two parents are 45 minutes or more late to pick up their child.

    A) If I was a real a-hole I could just leave the kids alone at the park to wait.
    B) Most of these parents haven’t had more the a 5 minute conversation with me in a year. Its like I’m a free baby sitter. Half just drop them off at the games as well.
    C) They don’t have a clue about the dangers in parks. I’m always on the look out for the kids in my charge when there’s an adult that I don’t recognize, but trying to teach kids the drills at practice and watch all 15, its possible that one can get lost.

Nothing has ever happened on my watch, but I don’t know if that’s because I’m lucky or good.

The nation doesn’t want to accept the fact that many parents simply are careless with their kids and place them in situations hazardous to their child and then they look for a scape goat. Heck its coming up on summer, how many kids are going to be left in their car seat to literally cook to death.

    Sorry off topic.

  6. thewordofme says:

AMEN to all that. It’s something I have gone through in the past and I can surely sympathize with you. You can’t take your eyes off children for a second.
I live in a warm climate and every summer I dread the stories I know I will hear of some poor little sweetheart dying in the car seat.

Always a pleasure to talk with you Qboa.

Man, I once worked for a public relations firm, and my job was to cut out newspaper articles that might “hurt” one of the clients, and I swear that every week there was a sex scandal with the Catholic church.

I’m not sure whether Catholics priests are any more savage than the average citizen. I wouldn’t trust them with my child. Still, I guess we are so outraged because we want to be able to expect more from them. lol…they just won’t let us!
