Religion and Science Are Complementary…Yeah Right

More than 12,400 Christian clergy members from all across the United States have signed the Christian Clergy Letter, a two-paragraph statement promoting a shared understanding and acceptance of evolution and Christianity.

The letter:
“We the undersigned, Christian clergy from many different traditions, believe that the timeless truths of the Bible and the discoveries of modern science may comfortably coexist. We believe that the theory of evolution is a foundational scientific truth, one that has stood up to rigorous scrutiny and upon which much of human knowledge and achievement rests. To reject this truth or to treat it as “one theory among others” is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children.

We believe that among God’s good gifts are human minds capable of critical thought and that the failure to fully employ this gift is a rejection of the will of our Creator. To argue that God’s loving plan of salvation for humanity precludes the full employment of the God-given faculty of reason is to attempt to limit God, an act of hubris. We urge school board members to preserve the integrity of the science curriculum by affirming the teaching of the theory of evolution as a core component of human knowledge. We ask that science remain science and that religion remain religion, two very different, but complementary, forms of truth.”

Well I have a few objections to this letter, as I’m sure most fundagelicals in America do, although their objection is way different than mine I’m sure.

“We the undersigned, Christian clergy from many different traditions, believe that the timeless truths of the Bible and the discoveries of modern science may comfortably coexist.”

Just what “timeless truths” are we talking about here? We are learning that many of the stories are false as science explores our earth’s beginnings and the course it has gone through to arrive where we are today.  The Bible says mankind began a certain way, yet science is telling us the Biblical stories are false.

“We believe that the theory of evolution is a foundational scientific truth, one that has stood up to rigorous scrutiny and upon which much of human knowledge and achievement rests. To reject this truth or to treat it as “one theory among others” is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children.”

Now here they’re talking truth…evolution is true, the earth is many billions of years old, humans have been walking the world for 200,000+- years…these things alone give lie to the bible. The only way religion and science co-exist is if lots of facts are just ignored. But, kudo’s for trying.

“We believe that among God’s good gifts are human minds capable of critical thought and that the failure to fully employ this gift is a rejection of the will of our Creator. To argue that God’s loving plan of salvation for humanity precludes the full employment of the God-given faculty of reason is to attempt to limit God, an act of hubris.”

Try telling this to a fundamentalist, evangelical, rapture believing, religious nut job, and they’ll likely go for your gonads to get you to repent. Those people want to restrict your children’s and your own access to any science results that even closely resemble a Bible denying fact.  They realize that science is destroying our ability to believe these old Hebrew myths and they want control so they can purge your minds of all this godless belief.

“We ask that science remain science and that religion remain religion, two very different, but complementary, forms of truth.”

Sorry there is only one form of truth being spoken of here.  I’ll give you a hint…it isn’t religion.

This is a tiny thing, but blogs look better when there are no errors. “Complimentary” in the title of your post should be “Complementary” Notice the I and the E. I like any liberal blogger, though.
