A Sane and Logical God

Would a sane and logical God create as many as 80 sextillion stars (update–300 sextillion is new estimate-12-2010) in an observable universe that is about 93,000,000,000 light years ( a light year as distance is about 6 trillion miles) in diameter, all because he wanted to lord over a few people here on earth 6,000 years ago?

Why would a God this powerful and omnipotent want the adoration of a group of goat herders and set in motion the obscene sequence of events on this poor planet that has resulted in the unimaginable horrors that human history has witnessed?

Why would an all-powerful being that has an intellect and (reputed) powers that us mere humans could not even fully comprehend, want a bunch of savages to pray and idolize Him/Her/It and want to tell these “chosen” people how to live, what to eat, how far to set up a latrine from your camp tents, etc., etc.?

Why would an omniscient, all seeing, all knowing God even think up the god-awful stupid melodrama of “Original Sin” and sending a “son” to earth to be a “human” sacrifice to expiate our non-existent “sins”?

How can a loving, caring, compassionate God sit on His/Her/It’s throne and watch the millions and millions (probably billions) of agonizing, excruciating, horrible, bloody deaths of pure innocent humans…women, children, infants, and men who are doing nothing more than trying to care for their families.

How can this omniscient being possibly justify all the misery He/She/It has caused to be suffered by my brothers and sisters on this lonely planet spinning around a third rate star in a third rate galaxy?

But, the best question of all…how can so many people believe this crap with all the stupidly nonsensical,  non-logical, and seriously demented stories?

  1. Hi B, how are you?

Nobody knows why they believe it. They don’t even know, they’ll just tell you to read whatever bible they’re thumping.

Do you think there’s such a thing as a god gene? I’m serious. It doesn’t seem to be a choice—you either believe or you don’t. Don’t you think it’s likely impossible to get that many people to believe in something so irrational unless those people already have a need to believe? Is it a human flaw? Something we’ll evolve out of someday? Not looking like it at the moment….

Hello D, I’m great, thank you for asking. I hope you are well.

I love to talk to Bible thumpers. I like to get into a deep discussion and prime them with questions such as; “Did you know that DNA science has proven that we did not descend from 2 people 6000 years ago, and that this proves, circumstantially, that there was no Adam and Eve, and if there was no Adam and Eve there was no original sin , and if there were no original sin than Jesus wasn’t needed to die for our sins? What does this say about Jesus?”

Then I just look at them with a skeptical frown and watch them squirm. I know it’s kinda’ cruel but it almost makes up for the times when I’ve been made to feel like sh*t when I used to live down South and Christians would do the same to me, in reverse, in mixed company. 🙂 This was way before the interwebz and I didn’t have as much knowledge as I do now.

Sometimes I think I wouldn’t be surprised if something like a God Gene were found, and then I get to thinking about how much religion is soaked into our everyday life and our society and wonder if it’s not just a matter of most people going with the flow, a kind of peer pressure thing. I really can’t explain why I am so atheistic in my world view. I like to think it’s because I’m so smart 🙂 , but then I wake up, and I realize just how dumb I really am.

I have run across some extremely smart people in my lifetime and some of them are very religious and it freaks me out how they must have a disconnect in their brain and can keep two mutually discordant world views afloat while sounding so intelligent.

I bet the canyons and hills around Bisbee are beautiful nowadays, what with all the fall colors. One of my daughters and her husband love to travel and explore the town and areas around there. They generally stay at the Copper Queen hotel.

You stay well and be good now…
